Royal Tokaji

Aromas of peach, apricot, orange peel and quince leap out of the glass. The 1999 Szt. Tamás is a rich and full-bodied wine, yet is refreshing and easy to drink. The Szt. Tamás Vineyard is located north of Royal Tokaji’s Nyulászó Vineyard on south-, southwest- and southeast-facing slopes at nearly 750 feet, overlooking the winery’s cellars. Named for the apostle Saint Thomas, the vineyard has red, volcanic clay soil high in iron oxide that has the ability to retain moisture well helpful in drought years. Wines produced from grapes grown in the Szt. Tamás Vineyard have a lovely, pure fruitiness, nice acidity and good ageability. Serving Suggestions: Serve slightly chilled (50–54°F) in a small port glass or a glass of similar size (there are approximately eight two-ounce servings per 500ml bottle). Tokaji Aszú wines are wonderful on their own as an apéritif or as a digestif, with cigars and petits fours. These wines also pair well with a wide variety of foods, including foie gras, fruit tarts, chocolate desserts and robustly flavored cheeses.

Wine Spectator

Positively electric. The racy style of the vintage shows in this laserlike Tokaji. The searing acidity is matched by intense flavors of apricot, orange peel, juniper, cedar and mineral. Has fine length. Drink now through 2030.

Score: 95. —Bruce Sanderson, 2007.

Wine Enthusiast

This unique and delicious dessert wine from Hungary offers apricot and honey on the nose and palate, as well as an earthier element of tobacco and mocha. It’s dense but delicate, too, with a weight and complexity that unfolds in the mouth.

Score: 90. —Susan Kostrzewa, December 01, 2007.
