I grew up in Boulder, and attended the University of Colorado majoring in English
Literature and Psychology. My professional life included many years of retail, office
management, bookkeeping, and medical administration.
I came into wine via my gourmet cooking hobby. I always seemed to have a knack
for wine and food pairing even before any formal wine education. It was fascinating
to me to see how flavors and textures could be enhanced or changed according to
which wine you chose to pair with a meal. I wanted to know more, which led me to
attend the International Wine Guild in Denver, where I earned my level two Executive
Sommelier Certification in 2006. I am planning to continue on with my education to
earn my Master Certification.
The most interesting pairings in my opinion are those that appear to be
contradictory. What is now considered a classic pairing, foie gras and Sauternes,
are two seemingly opposite components that work beautifully together. The contrast
between the fatty duck liver, and the sugar and acidity in the sweet dessert wine,
create a truly amazing experience. Pairing wine to food is so much fun and the
possibilities are endless!
The most joy for me in this industry, is that personal relationship I have with my
customers. I love the questions and challenges that are presented to me everyday.
Working with the customer to find the perfect wine for a special occasion, mid-week
meal, or just to sit and enjoy, is where I find the most satisfaction.
