| Why California Chardonnay? Chardonnay is without a doubt the single most popular international white wine! Originating out of the world-class wine region of Burgundy, Chardonnay has traveled and is harvested in almost every major wine producing region (maybe not successfully)! What event landed California Chardonnay on the map? One event that triggered the California Chard craze would be the “Judgement of Paris”, an event that surged American wine making history. The Judgment of Paris was a wine tasting competition in Paris in 1976. A panel of French judges convened to blindly taste and rank the best quality Chardonnay’ s and Cabernet Sauvignon’s. California wines rated best in each category, Chards: Mike Grgich winemaker for Ch. Montelena and Cabs: Warren Winiarski for Stags Leap Wine Cellars. California Chard accounts for almost 25% of the world’s total Chard plantings. The trend for Cali Chard leaned towards the rich buttery Burgundian style, but today we are seeing a trend slowly pulling away from that extreme. Some critics might be tired of Chard’s popularity, but some California wineries still produce well-balanced beautiful Chards. At Incredible, we have everything from the super buttery to the very dry and crisp Chablis styles of Chard. Some of Our Favorites: Textured, richer styles of Chard: Cambria Katherine’s Vineyard Chardonnay $18.99 on-sale $17.99 “Bright with citrus, apple, peach, and vanilla aromas. Rich, mouth-filling flavors of grapefruit, citrus blossom, white peach, and sweet oak lead to a crisp finish with a lasting impression of spicy oak." Cartlidge & Browne Chardonnay $13.99 “Ripe, lush aromas of grapefruit, pineapple, pear, and orange peel are enhanced by clean oak spice and the creaminess of malo-lactic fermentation. The palate is especially full and smooth in texture, with loads of ripe citrus, juicy pear and tangerine fruit. Enjoy with grilled poultry and seafood, light pasta dishes, and semi-soft cheeses. Great with paella and lighter risottos too.” Six Hands Chardonnay $15.99 “Aged 12 months in French and American oak barrels, this wine has aromas of tropical fruit and banana with a hint of toasty oak. Flavors of green apple and pear balance the taste.” Crisper drier styles of Chard: Foxglove Chardonnay $13.49 “All tank-fermented and lee-stirred with no malolactic, this is outrageously delicious Chardonnay showing plenty of white currant, pineapple, and tangerine skin notes, with gorgeous fruit purity, medium body, crisp acidity, and oodles of naked varietal fruit that is surprisingly complex and rich with great zestiness.” 90pts Robert Parker Joel Gott Monterey Chardonnay $15.99 “Natural balance between sugar and acidity by harvest time. This diverse growing environment has produced a Chardonnay with flavors of citrus, pear and jasmine with a bright acid structure. 100% stainless steel fermentation and no malolactic fermentation displaying the fruit’s characteristics without heavier notes of butter and toasty oak.” Click here for a link to the original Wall Street Journal Article |
