Large-Format Bottles Are Fun, Affordable & Smart
3L - Also known as Jeroboams, these bottles contain 3 liters of wine; the equivalent of 4 regular bottles. You can find bottles with 5, 6, 9, 12, and even 27 liter capacity bottles. These larger bottles are appealing for several reasons:
1) Large Bottles Age Better To purchase large bottles when you plan to cellar them for many years or decades. 2) Large Bottles Are Attractive Large format bottles make for great decoration. Whether it’s prior to opening the bottle or after it’s poured dry, a 3-liter bottle is a handsome addition and great conversation piece. That said, don’t store full bottles in a sunny, warm room unless you’re going to drink them relatively soon. 3) Large Bottles Are Fun Let’s face it, if you’re going to open a large bottle, you must be in a group. And what’s more fun than trying a new wine with friends. I recently hosted a dinner where we poured four magnums and a 6.0 liter bottle. Once we figured out how to safely hold that behemoth, everyone wanted their turn pouring a glass. It was great fun for all. And now that gorgeous empty bottles sits on a shelf near my wine glasses. 4) Large Bottles Can Be Affordable Finally, remember that big bottles don’t have to have big prices. Sometimes large formats are actually cheaper on a per-bottle basis than traditional 750 ml bottles.
